Write To The Volkswagen Factory
|
Once you acquire your VW project, one of the first things you'll probably want to do, is write to the Factory
in Germany to get information about your VW. Amazingly, the Volkswagen Factory still maintains records for most vehicles they have manufactured, and they can usually tell you the exact day your VW was built, it's original paint and interior colors, the engine serial number, the destination country and any
special options that were installed at the factory (like Safari windows, gas heater...).
They'll even send you a fancy certificate that lists everything they know about your VW.
|
To receive this info, send them a check for $75 and a cordial letter explaining that you're interested
in any information they might have about the manufacture of your VW (include the VIN ("Vehicle Id Number") and description (like "1964 Sunroof Bug") of your VW). Volkswagen provides this information
as a courtesy to its customers. Some of their records (microfilm?)
are over 65 years old! So it's not an exact science. Usually you'll receive the information you requested within a month or 2, but it could take up to 6 months.
As with most things in life, there are no guarantees. We've heard about owners who never received their certificate, and others who received information for a completely different vehicle!
If it doesn't work out the first time, don't get mad, don't write angry letters - just chill, wait a few
months and try again.
