Vintage Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupes and Convertibles

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was intended as a VW "Sports Car" and a more stylish alternative to the bulbous and practical beetle. Designed by Italian coachbuilder Ghia and with a body hand-built by Karmann, this sporty VW used the same drivetrain as the Type-I bug, but sat on a pan that was 12" wider than the bug's pan. With fenders welded to the body, instead of bolted on like the bug's, the finely crafted Ghia was an instant success and for 1956, the first model year, more than 10,000 units were sold. The basic shape of the Karmann Ghia remained constant throughout the years of production, but in 1958 the classic convertible was offered and for the 1959 models the headlight position was raised for a more modern look. Later models sprouted the federally-mandated 5mph bumpers, changing the Ghia "look" forever, but the beautiful VW Karmann Ghia remained wildly popular right through its final production year in 1974.
